It all started with a Nerf gun
How one kid's first mowing job grew into a full-service outdoor care company.
Q&A with owner Bryce Taylor
Q: So how did Taylored Outdoor Services get started?
Honestly? A Nerf gun. I was nine and really wanted one, and my parents said no. They told me if I wanted it that bad, I'd have to earn the money myself. So I walked over to our neighbor's house and asked if I could mow their lawn.
"Honestly? A Nerf gun."
Q: And they said yes?
They did. And then they asked me to keep doing it, so I mowed it every week for the rest of the summer and they paid me monthly. I got the Nerf gun pretty quick. But by then I'd figured out I actually liked the work.
Q: How'd it grow from there?
Word gets around a neighborhood fast. A couple more neighbors asked me to do their yards, and when winter hit, people needed their driveways cleared, so I started doing snow too. It just kept building one yard at a time. Now we do lawn care, mulch, hardscaping, lighting, clean-ups and snow removal all over the Des Moines metro.
Q: Where does the name come from?
My last name's Taylor. I wanted a name that could cover a lot of different services, and "Taylored" fit. Every yard's different, so we tailor the work to what your property actually needs instead of doing the same thing everywhere.
Q: What should people expect when they hire you?
Pretty simple stuff that a lot of companies skip. We show up when we say we will, we answer the phone, and we tell you straight what something's going to cost. I treat every yard like it's my own, because to me it kind of is. My name's on it.
